It comes unfinished and the striking end had raised end grain. Great work Amazon.The mallet quality is about what one should expect for the price. I used my stationary sander to smooth the end grain and applied two coats of polyurethane.The mallet, as it is now, would cost twice as much. It's hard to complain about a carpenter's mallet at this price. Actually, if all had gone smooth I'd give it 5 stars.I had to return the first mallet as it had many fissures and chips, but Amazon took care of the problem with no hassel.
